Principles and Ground Rules

A learning plan should be used to enhance the quality of education and can only be effective in the context of a good teaching and learning relationship. A commitment to act on issues arising out of using the learning plan should be present from the student and the clinical supervisor. Learning plans should be used flexibly according to learning needs and joint ownership should exist between student and the clinical supervisor.

Ground Rules

Learning plans should:

  • make expectations explicit;
  • be filled out at the beginning of the learning experience;
  • be mutually agreed by the learner and supervisor;
  • be confidential between the parties;
  • be reviewed regularly, three-monthly intervals being the maximum.
