Unit Outline

The Unit Outline is an important document that is issued to students within the first week of the academic timetable. It provides students with core information about their units of study. This document should be issued to students in printed form.

The unit outline contains the following information:

  • rationale for the unit
  • teaching and learning processes
  • required and recommended readings
  • assessment details
    • nature of assessment tasks
    • weighting of each task and assessment criteria
    • specific attendance and performance requirements for the unit
    • timetable of internal tests and assignments and other assessment deadlines
    • how the assessment procedures relate to the objectives of the unit
    • consequences of failure to meet the attendance requirements
    • assessment deadlines and word limits will also be specified
    • required referencing style
    • what constitutes plagiarism
    • how plagiarism will be dealt with by the University

Course requirements will not be changed unless in exceptional circumstances and students will receive adequate warning and consultation.

The University of Tasmania policy that relates to the Unit Outline is the Code of Conduct for Teaching and Learning, available at http://www.utas.edu.au/policy/code_conduct.pdf
