Rural Clinical School, Tasmania

In the 2000-2001 Federal Budget, funding was allocated to develop a network of nine new Rural Clinical Schools as part of the Australian Government's Department of Health and Ageing - Regional Health Strategy. A network of 10 Rural Clinical Schools has been established across Australia. This network strengthens the rural focus in health science education and encourages health professionals to take up a career in rural clinical practice.

In Tasmania, the Rural Clinical School (RCS) is located in the North West region. Rural clinical schools focus on preparing medical and other health professional students for rural practice. They provide students with clinical education and training, and support health practitioners in rural and remote areas. This major health education initiative is attracting and injecting significant capital infrastructure into rural and regional areas in which clinical schools are located, facilitating the provision and delivery of rural medical education equal to, and linked with respective urban university counterparts.
